Antiwar Committee in Solidarity with the Struggle for Selfdetermination is building solidarity with ‪#‎Russian‬ democracy activists in an effort to build an international and internationalist antiwar movement in solidarity with the struggles for democracy and self determination. At risk of being targets for repression, these activists sent a letter of solidarity to a rally against Putin's bombing campaign in ‪#‎Syria‬ in ‪#‎Chicago‬, Illinois, US. 

 

"It might sound strange but over the past few years our country has faced the problem we didn't expect it to face ever again. It is ‪#‎Politicalprisoners‬. The current regime is doing whatever possible just to save itself from total collapse. They see even the smallest peaceful protest as the biggest threat. It is them who are scared, but they want us to be afraid. Almost everyone who dares to say "no" to the current outrageous RF policy turns into a public enemy. Some people have already been jailed just for expressing their political views openly, just for their peaceful non-violent struggle.

‪#‎IldarDadin‬ was sentenced to 3 years in jail for his single protest, which is actually allowed in our country. He allegedly broke the rules several times (that is what is said in his case).

Sharing pro-Ukranian image on social networks was enough to put ‪#‎DariaPoludova‬, an activist form ‪#‎Krasnkdar‬, in prison.

‪#‎IvanNepomnyaschicky‬, 25, is currently serving his sentence just for taking part in a 2012 peaceful legal rally against the third presidential term of Putin.

Above listed cases are not unique. ‪#‎Pavlensky‬, ‪#‎Krivov‬, ‪#‎Vologzheninova‬, ‪#‎Bubeev‬, ‪#‎Bolotnaya‬ prisoners... it is definitely not the whole list of the regime victims. Unfortunately some names still remain unknown. Either way those are people who had enough courage to stand tall opposing the regime as with everyday it is getting more dangerous to express political views opposite to pro-government ones. None can feel secure.

Though Syria is a different country, with probably quite the opposite cultural background, we would like to say one thing we are in solidarity with all the people suffering hard from the brutal and bloody Assad's regime. 

Thousands of your innocent peaceful citizens were murdered just for almost the same reason different political or religious views. Lots of families were broken, thousands of lives were ruined. Many people were forced to flee their motherland. This regime seems to have brought nothing but war and chaos.

It is hard to realize that we are currently the minority that is not enough to come up with some positive changes or ideas. But anyway there is one thing we want you to know we are totally against the ongoing Assad's aggression as well as Russia's military involvement. RF seems to prop up the ruling regime in Syria, caring only for its own political interests. They don't tend to care either about peoples' lives or about what might be left after its airstrikes destroy cities and kill civilians (not just IS militants).

War is about death, destruction, misery. War is the ultimate crime. But through many years people and their governments keep making the same mistake. As none eventually gains from making wars.

We, Russian activists say our "NO" to that war and demand to free all Russia's political prisoners. As many of those who are behind bars now stand tall for peace and harmony all over the world."
